This year, we have decided to build an organic garden with raised terraces in the MolinoLab . We want to learn about horticulture and bring it closer to the visitors who come to develop and participate in the projects and activities .

An organic garden is characterized by:

  • Do not destroy the earth or the microorganisms that inhabit it (We do it by removing it, harar, since excess oxygen is harmful to them)
  • Do not use pesticides or chemical fertilizers
  • Maintain and promote biodiversity
  • Improve soil fertility using green manure (Organic remains of the plants themselves that decompose)
  • Use associations of plants that symbiotically help each other

In the MolinoLab organic garden, we are testing different cultivation methods to check which ones are best adapted to the conditions of the place and the different plants.

We have built seven raised terraces using, to delimit them, tiles from one of the collapsed roofs of one of the pigsty . As a substrate we have collected horse manure that has rested for at least six months on the farm and as mulch we have used straw from the previous year. The padding fulfills several functions:

  • It hinders the appearance of adventitious plants, the so-called "weeds". As you can see, in the catalog of wild flora, most of them have many benefits and uses.
  • It keeps the soil moist by preventing the sun from drying out the bare soil.
  • It decomposes progressively providing nutrients to the crops
  • It hosts many insects, some of them beneficial for plant development.

After studying the different crop associations , we have decided to make the following associations in each of the terraces:

  1. Corn, lentils, potatoes, zucchini.
Our Spanish version of the Milpa (Pre-Columbian Cultivation Association)
The corn serves as a guide or tutor to the lentil, which fixes nitrogen in its roots and makes it available to the corn and zucchini, which are more nutritionally demanding.
  2. Tomato, garlic, onion, basil, marigold, calendula
  3. Strawberry, lettuce, garlic, spinach, leek
  4. Eggplant, garlic, celery, lettuce onion
  5. Pepper, garlic, onion, basil, lettuce
  6. Beetroot, onion, lettuce, cucumber, leek

We also use certain aromatic plants and flowers as auxiliary plants to mislead certain insects that do not interest us, repel others and attract beneficial insects such as the ladybug (Voracious predator of aphids).

As for the seeds, we have decided to order them from the Zahoz center . A traditional seed center in Cepeda, Salamanca. We have also bought some seedlings in the Ciudad Rodrigo market.

We have also placed some pallets on one of the sides of the terraces to protect the plants from the wind, give them some shade and allow some of the plants to climb over them.
