During the 2023 academic year, we hosted weekly Afro-Colombian dance workshops at MolinoLab, taught by Salomé Méndez. The dance chosen for this year was Bullerengue.
Bullerengue is a rhythm and dance from the Colombian Caribbean, a sung dance performed only by women, of African ancestry, apparently derived from the ritual customs of Palenque de San Basilio, forming part of the initiation rites for young girls entering puberty, with Cartagena as a reference point.
In Colombia, it is mainly performed by the current descendants of the maroons who inhabited the Palenque de San Basilio. In Colombia, "bullerengue" or "bullarengue" means "pollerón" (a large skirt, worn especially at parties).
